Sunday Session @ Santiago's, Leeds - 24/9/06 - Image by Ani McNeice
Sad but true, some things seem to last forever - eternal profane and impossible love, carrier bags, gobstoppers and the chewing gum stuck to the back of your shoe sometimes that drops off over years and years of being carried around only to be trodden into someone's carpet at the end of an unfulfilling but sticky lifetime of being the 'hanger on'. There are some things anyone can take but in the inevitable onslaught of longevity (and the time it should last) no one is programmed for the loss life entails. Thinking back to yesterday I don't think I was anywhere near enough to being prepared for the untimely death of my printer. Especially a day like yesterday. There are a million and one things that need printing which now face an uncertain future. Ok, so you could argue that 'it's just a printer' but I bought it less than two years ago and now it's useless. Apparently a major operation (messy but 50/50 chances of pulling through) could bring the printer back from the dead but to be honest from what I've read the chances of it working are lower than seeing the reintroduction of the dodo (or maybe the t-rex) in it's natural habitat.
My printers natural habitat is under the shelf, it's still there. It spat out everything I needed, infinite amounts of information embellished paper, reams of words and all things good. It did eat lots of ink though and was expensive to feed.
I'm going out now and am going to think about this all in more detail, so until I get back - please don't crash computer !!!
Ah good, you didn't crash, so let's see, where were we ?
So, the printer, it is broken and it won't be coming back, so unfair, so unfair.
Many things have happened since my last diary entry, my hair has grown (hasn't everyones ?) and is a different colour, it took a while to get used to it but now it's fine. I've spent some time writing over the top of the blue lyrics I printed out, some of the words were missing and some had blank lines through them, still, it is probably better than having to write them all out again.
My Mum told me that things happen in threes, especially when stuff breaks so true to form after the printer had broken my TV aerial and alarm system were quick to elect themselves for the unworthy cause that is brokeness. All problems aside it's been a good month, Justin sat on my belly the other night cabbaged out, all sleepy and cute before deciding to run up and down the full length of the sofa for the next 20 or so minutes. After he calmed down he came back to sit on my belly so I was quite impressed by his bossiness. Cookie is fine, bigger than ever !
Earlier in the year I built nesting boxes to put in my garden for the birds, a blue tit family had chicks in one in the Summer, it was quite sad really, most of the hatchlings fledged early and there were two tiny birds left. They must have attempted to fly before their wings had fully opened up and they ended up living on my garden floor amongst the pot plants and flowers for a while.
It was worrying, sometimes mother birds leave their young if they don't fledge and you can't touch the young birds either because you change the scent on their feathers by doing so and the parents of the young sometimes don't tend to birds who have been handled. I was fraught with worry at times honestly, one night it rained so hard and the next morning I approached the garden to find that one of the chicks had found the tiniest hole in the door and hopped into the conservatory, it had died and I cried all morning. The other bird, remained outside for the next four days, looking helpless, not knowing what to do. His parents still fed him and one afternoon I stepped outside to discover he had gone. I heard him singing in a nearby tree and was more than happy to know that he survived against all odds.
The other day I saw a blue tit in the garden perched on the fence, bobbing it's little head about looking around and I wondered if he was the same bird that had survived. They often return after nesting, they nest a few miles away for some of the time after their chicks have hatched and then they make their way back.
Moving on .... I have played in Leeds recently and am returning there this Wednesday to play at the Wardrobe which I've been looking forward to. Ani McNeice whom I met at Santiago's took pictures of all artists playing and we enjoyed a night of varied music. I also played at the Tigers Lair recently and tried to help myself from falling around the stage full of laughter, was it something I said ?
